This highly respected global competition recognizes outstanding quality and innovation in whiskey production.

Why This Award Matters for Colorado Whiskey
Founder and CEO Al Laws expressed pride in the achievement: “We couldn’t be prouder. This is a win for the entire state of Colorado, thanks to our unique growing and distilling conditions that create such bold flavors. It’s a testament to our team’s hard work and the innovators pushing American whiskey forward.”
Laws Whiskey House stands out in the growing Colorado whiskey scene by blending traditional techniques with local terroir. The distillery uses heirloom grains from Colorado family farms and leverages Denver’s high elevation for distinctive aging.

Aged for 3+ years (up to 10 years) in new 53-gallon American oak barrels, the cask strength version is bottled uncut and unfiltered at barrel proof for intense, pure flavors. About  Laws Whiskey House
Laws Whiskey House, a premier grain-to-glass distillery in Denver, Colorado, was founded in 2011 by Al Laws, a former finance professional with a lifelong passion for whiskey. What began as a pursuit to craft terroir-driven American whiskeys has grown into one of Colorado’s most acclaimed producers, emphasizing heirloom grains sourced exclusively from two local family farms in the San Luis Valley and eastern plains. Leveraging Denver’s high-altitude climate—marked by hot days, cool nights, and thin air—Laws Whiskey House creates bold, flavorful expressions that capture the rugged essence of the Rocky Mountains while honoring traditional distilling methods.

At the heart of the portfolio is the award-winning Four Grain Bourbon, made from a unique mash bill of 60% corn, 20% heirloom wheat, 10% heirloom rye, and 10% heirloom malted barley. Aged in new 53-gallon charred American oak barrels for a minimum of three years (with some up to ten), this flagship bourbon delivers complex notes of baking spice, black tea, honeysuckle, orange, clove, and dried fruit. Variants like the Cask Strength Four Grain Bourbon—named World’s Best Small Batch Bourbon at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards—and Bottled in Bond expressions highlight the distillery’s commitment to quality, with open-air fermentation and meticulous grain-forward techniques producing distinctive Colorado whiskeys that stand out in the American craft scene.

Blue Note Bourbon is an award-winning whiskey portfolio crafted to pay tribute to Memphis’s musical history. It’s distilled in partnership with the famed Bardstown Bourbon Company and matured just north of Memphis.

It’s known for its flagship Blue Bourbon, Juke Joint, Crossroads, Uncut, and Straight Whiskey. Recently, the brand announced it would be releasing yet another whiskey: Blue Note Special Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

The second edition of this annual release is a blend of bourbon matured in ten casks from Kentucky and Tennessee. They are cognac, madeira, sherry, port, triple sec, madeira, apricot brandy, amontillado, vanilla cognac and vino de Naranja. The included whiskeys range in age from four to nineteen years old and have differing mash bills. This unfiltered bourbon was bottled at a barrel strength of 116.3-proof.

According to Blue Note, the result is memorable whiskey that begins with a nose of fruit, cherry, peach, leather, oak, and vanilla. Sipping it reveals a cream and light mouthfeel featuring flavors like oak, vanilla, roasted nuts, dark chocolate, and citrus. The finish is warming, dry, and lingering.

“Having launched several wildly successful limited releases in recent years, whiskey enthusiasts have come to expect these types of unique offerings from Blue Note,” Chris Crosbie, Vice President, Sales, B.R. Distilling Company said in a press release.

“This year’s Special Reserve is both exceptional and uncommon, having been crafted from 10 unique types of casks.”

BARDSTOWN, Ky.  – Heaven Hill Distillery announced today the release of Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 19-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey. Each spring, this annual, highly limited release features some of the distillery’s oldest inventory of aging Whiskey, continuing the standard of excellence Heaven Hill has practiced since 1935. Each release in the ultra-premium collection features one of the six traditional American Whiskey mashbills produced by Heaven Hill, one of the only heritage distilleries to produce this range. This 2025 edition features Heaven Hill’s Wheat Whiskey mashbill, comprised of 51% Wheat, 37% Corn, 12% Malted Barley and is bottled at 100 proof. With an age statement of 19 years, this release is made up of 277 barrels produced in August and September of 2005, that were aged on the 5th and 6th floors of rickhouse Y. To date, it is the oldest Wheat Whiskey released by Heaven Hill.

With its subtle nose of seasoned oak and honey sweetness followed by elements of clove and nutmeg, this edition of the Heaven Hill Heritage Collection has all the hallmarks of a classic Wheat Whiskey enhanced by the extended time spent in the rickhouse. A testament to its age, the initial notes on the palate include aged oak and baking spices particularly cloves. These elements are followed by rich and sweet notes of cinnamon graham crackers. The finish is warm, but medium in length dominated by maple syrup and caramel sweetness along with tannic elements adding a peppery tingle.

“This 19-year-old Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is especially unique, as a product with this mashbill at this age offers an exceptional depth and complexity that is rarely seen,” says Master Distiller Conor O’Driscoll. “It truly represents the high standard that Heaven Hill is known for and is a great example of how craftsmanship and patience can pay off when you’re willing to wait for the highest-quality product to come from the Whiskey-making process.”

Kentucky Peerless Distlling Company Releases Toasted Rye Batch 1

February 17, 2025 By Dustin Scoggins

Kentucky Peerless Distilling
Photo Credit: Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co.

Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company, a family-owned and operated craft distillery in Louisville, announces the release of its Toasted Rye Whiskey.

The release will occur with Batch 1 on March 15, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the Peerless Distillery located at 120 North 10th Street. Peerless Toasted Rye will then begin distribution in Kentucky and eventually, nationwide. There is a two-bottle purchase limit per person.

Peerless Toasted Rye is aged in two separate oak barrels. The small batch rye is initially aged in the distillery’s standard, char level 3 barrel. This process develops the desired flavor profiles of caramel, brown sugar, and toffee. The already barrel-aged whiskey is then placed in a toasted barrel to finish. The toasted barrel adds more complexity with honey, vanilla, toasted spices, and chocolate. The unique aging process allows for an elevated nose and palate.

“We hand-select each barrel for the finishing process. We chose to use a medium toast because it contains less tannins, which results in a more aromatic whiskey with warm, sweet, savory character and strong vanilla overtones, ”explains Peerless Head Taster John Wadell. “May 2017 marked a historic moment for Kentucky Peerless and the Taylor family. On that day, we released our first brown spirit in over a century: a rye whiskey. Peerless rye holds a special significance for us, as it represents the revival of a family legacy dedicated to crafting exceptional spirits. At Kentucky Peerless, we maintain the highest standards, and this release is a beautiful example of what we can come together to craft. We’re thrilled to introduce our Toasted Rye to you. We believe you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.”

The Toasted Rye follows the successful release of their Toasted Bourbon, which has made quite a splash. Kentucky Peerless Toasted Bourbon was awarded top in its class, given a score of 98 in the 2024 International Wine and Spirits Competition. Peerless High Rye Bourbon was named top Bourbon of the Year and their Double Oak Rye has consistently received Gold medals.

About Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co.

The family-owned and operated craft distillery is located in Louisville, Kentucky. It was established in 1889 and resurrected in 2013 by Corky Taylor, 4thGeneration, and Carson Taylor, 5th Generation. The distillery is known for its commitment to producing handcrafted, sweet mash bourbon and rye whiskey using traditional methods and the finest ingredients.

Buffalo Trace Distillery’s 26th Bottle in its Experimental Collection

February 16, 2025 By Dustin Scoggins

Buffalo Trace Distillery

Buffalo Trace Distillery is releasing the 26th bottle in its ongoing Experimental Collection. And this one has a flavor unlike any of its bourbons. The Experimental Collection: Spirits Distilled from Grain and Hops” has a unique hoppiness that fans of whiskey and beer might enjoy, according to the announcement.

Master distiller Harlen Wheatley made the spirit by infusing raw distillate for 30 minutes with two different hops — Saaz noble hops, a Czechoslovakian variety commonly found in bohemian pilsners, and Zythos, an American hop with tropical and subtle herbal notes, according to the news release.

“Hoppy beers are a playground for brewers; there are many techniques used to capture different flavors. It inspired us to play around with this essential beer ingredient as well,” Wheatley said. “Thanks to the eleven-plus years of aging, the hop aroma and hop flavors are evident while providing a balanced bitterness that blends well with the spirit’s oaky whiskey character.”

The release is 90-proof, with a suggested retail price of $46.99. It’s available in limited quantities on select days at the Buffalo Trace Distillery Gift Shop beginning in late January.

According to the tasting notes, the spirit has citrus and herbal notes reminiscent of beer, with creamy vanilla and seasoned oak undertones on the nose. On the palate, it’s citrus with pronounced lemon and orange zest, fresh herbal and robust oak, with a clean, refreshing finish.

About Buffalo Trace Distillery:

Buffalo Trace began the Experimental Collection more than 20 years ago. The distillery has more than 30,000 barrels of experimental whiskeys aging in its warehouses, each with unique characteristics and changes to the mash bill, type of wood, barrel toast and more. Not every one makes it to the bottling stage and new additions are released periodically and on a limited basis.

Boann Distillery Releases its First Pot Still Whiskeys in U.S.

February 16, 2025 By Dustin Scoggins

Boann Distillery

Family-owned Boann Distillery announced the release of its first Single Pot Still Irish Whiskeys in the U.S. The three core expressions – Marsala, Madeira, and Pedro Ximénez – will be available in select states, including CA, FL, IN, MN, NE, ND, NY, SD, TX, and WI.

These releases join Boann’s celebrated portfolio of spirits, including Silks Irish Dry Gin and The Whistler Irish Whiskey. Each whiskey (47% ABV | SRP $69/700 ml) is crafted with award-winning Single Pot Still spirit and aged in carefully selected casks to deliver unique and distinct flavor profiles.

The new expressions honor the 160-year tradition of Single Pot Still whiskey distillation in the heart of Ireland’s Boyne Valley. Boann’s Managing Director and Founder, Pat Cooney, shared the vision behind the release: “This is the beginning of a journey to bring Irish whiskey back to its rightful place as a global leader. Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is uniquely Irish, and we’re reviving the heritage of Ireland’s lost distilleries while uniting traditional methods with modern innovation.”

The three expressions are presented in bespoke bottles designed to reflect the essence of grain, water, and wood. Each bottle features a textured surface that evokes images of barley blowing in the wind, the bark of oak trees, or the flames used to char the casks.

Key highlights of the new expressions include:

Marsala Cask Finish

Initially matured for three years in heavily charred ex-bourbon barrels sourced from Brown-Forman distilleries in Kentucky, followed by finishing in French oak Superiore and Fine Marsala casks from Cantine deVinci in Sicily.

Madeira Cask Finish

After initial aging in charred ex-bourbon barrels, this expression is finished in premium vintage Madeira casks sourced from Justino’s, a renowned Madeira house.

Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish

Matured for 3.5 years in Oloroso Sherry hogsheads from Bodegas Garvey in Spain, then finished in rare vintage PX Solera Chestnut and Oak casks from Malaga.

“This has always been our dream—to distill our own Irish whiskey in the heart of the Boyne Valley,” Cooney said. “These whiskeys carry the character and provenance of the land, writing a new chapter in the story of Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.”

About Boann Distillery

Boann Distillery is a family owned, state-of-the-art distillery located on the edge of the historic town of Drogheda, County Meath, in the heart of the Boyne Valley of Ireland. Big Easy Whiskey: New Orleans’ Premium Botanical-Infused American Whiskey

February 11, 2025 By Dow Scoggins

Big Easy Whiskey: New Orleans' Premium Botanical-Infused American Whiskey

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans-based Big Easy Spirits Company is redefining the flavored whiskey category with its flagship Big Easy Whiskey, a premium 5-year-old straight whiskey that puts authentic whiskey flavor front and center. Launched in early 2025 in its hometown of New Orleans, this innovative infused American whiskey starts with 100% straight whiskey distilled in Kentucky and Indiana from a traditional bourbon mash bill (81% corn, 15% rye, 4% malted barley). Aged for five years in used bourbon barrels for a smooth, rounded profile, it’s then expertly infused with over two dozen natural herbs, spices, botanicals, and fruits by Master Blender Kieran Walsh. The result is a bold yet approachable botanical-infused whiskey that enhances the spirit’s rich character without overpowering it – perfect for enthusiasts searching for high-quality flavored whiskey options.

This whiskey (86 proof, 43% ABV, $34.99 SRP for 750mL) shines as an everyday sipper, especially over ice where flavors evolve with each melt. Tasting notes feature toasty American whiskey aromas transitioning to warm baking spices like vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, with complex Amaro-like herbal layers of cedar and lemon balm on the palate. Versatile for cocktails honoring New Orleans’ legendary mixology, it adds depth to simple serves like “Easy Over Ice” or creative ones like “Easy Like Sunday Morning.” Founded by industry veterans and New Orleans natives, crafted this spirit to be neither pretentious nor gimmicky – bold and boozy, bitter and sweet, embodying the Big Easy’s laid-back soul. Now available online with shipping to 46 states and in select retailers, this New Orleans whiskey is ideal for holiday entertaining or casual sipping. Bourbon Outfitter

About Big Easy Spirits Company
Big Easy Whiskey was launched  in New Orleans in early 2025, captures the vibrant, laid-back essence of the Crescent City in every bottle. Founded by distilled spirits industry veterans and New Orleans natives, the brand aims to deliver a premium, approachable infused whiskey that’s neither pretentious nor gimmicky. Bold and boozy yet bitter and sweet, this whiskey embodies the entrepreneurial spirit and rich cocktail heritage of New Orleans, offering an everyday sipper that’s perfect for casual moments or sophisticated gatherings. Now available across 46 states, this innovative American whiskey redefines the flavored category with authentic quality and local inspiration.

How did New Orleans get the name, The Big Easy?
The nickname “The Big Easy” for New Orleans reflects the city’s renowned laid-back, easygoing lifestyle, vibrant jazz culture, and relaxed pace compared to faster-paced places like New York City (known as “The Big Apple”). While the exact origin is debated with several theories, the most widely accepted account traces its popularization to the 1970s.

New Orleans gossip columnist Betty Guillaud (sometimes spelled Guillot or similar) used the phrase in her newspaper columns to highlight the city’s carefree atmosphere in contrast to New York’s hustle. This usage caught on, especially after author James Conaway titled his 1970 crime novel The Big Easy (inspired by his time as a police reporter in the city, where he overheard the phrase), and the 1987 film adaptation starring Dennis Quaid further cemented it in popular culture.

Earlier theories include references to a early 20th-century dance hall called “The Big Easy Hall” in Gretna (across the river from New Orleans), where jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden performed, or slang among musicians describing how it was relatively “easy” to find gigs and make a living in the city’s thriving jazz scene compared to elsewhere. Other suggestions point to the city’s lenient attitude toward alcohol during Prohibition or its overall low-key vibe. Though locals rarely use “The Big Easy” themselves (preferring “New Orleans” or “NOLA”), the nickname endures as a celebration of the city’s unique charm.
