Woodford Reserve’s Limited Time New Bourbon

February 15, 2024 By Dustin Scoggins

Woodford Reserve

VERSAILLES, Ky. – Following the recent release of the acclaimed Double Double Oaked Bourbon, Woodford Reserve introduces its annual limited-edition Batch Proof—the 2024 expression bottled at a robust 121.2 proof (compared to the flagship’s 90.4 proof). This barrel-proof Kentucky straight bourbon celebrates the brand’s proprietary process, blending over 100 barrels from varying production dates, warehouse locations, and floor levels to capture the whiskey exactly as it emerges from the barrel. “Barrels from the upper floors of our heat-cycled warehouses often yield higher proofs, as seen in this batch,” said Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall. “Batch Proof invites enthusiasts to experience Woodford Reserve in its purest, uncut form.”

Presenting a deep burnt umber hue, the 2024 bourbon offers an inviting nose of vanilla bean, brown sugar pecans, citrus fruits, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. On the palate, expect rich toasted oak, cocoa, pineapple, strawberry, and spiced berries, leading to a lingering finish of strawberry, toasted oak, and raw honey. Available in limited quantities at select U.S. and global markets, and at the distillery.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Maverick Distilling is releasing a limited-edition Samuel Maverick Double Barrel Bourbon Rodeo Edition, a Certified Texas Whiskey in celebration of the San Antonio Rodeo. The Samuel Maverick Double Barrel Bourbon Rodeo Edition is pot-distilled, aged in the Lone Star State steps from the Alamo, and finished for an additional 18 months in a barrel previously used to mature Samuel Maverick Private Reserve Bourbon Whiskey. A nod to cowboy culture, Samuel Maverick Double Barrel Bourbon Rodeo Edition is an exclusive whiskey release with just 107 bottles available for purchase beginning February 8, 2024.

“With this special release, we are honoring the 75th Anniversary of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and the people who make it successful year after year,” said Dr. Kenneth Maverick, co-founder of Maverick Distilling. “The Rodeo gives so much to the people of San Antonio with bull riding, concerts, and excellent cuisine. It brings people together from all over Texas to celebrate and share this rich tradition. The Rodeo and western heritage have an important place in the fabric of San Antonio’s history, and we are paying homage to the cowboy and all of the Rodeo volunteers who keep this heritage alive.”

Samuel Maverick Double Barrel Bourbon Rodeo Whiskey was distilled from a mash of 72% Texas-grown corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. Maverick Distilling expertly selected the best barrels of Certified Texas Whiskey from a Texas distillery and aged it on-site for two to three years in new charred White Oak barrels. The team at Maverick Distilling skillfully blended the right barrels to bring out the sweet caramel flavors balanced with just the right pop of spice. This Barrel Proof Bourbon Whiskey was then finished in a Samuel Maverick Private Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey barrel for an additional 18 months for a unique flavor. Maverick Distilling’s Double Barrel Bourbon Rodeo Whiskey is non-chill filtered and hand-bottled at barrel proof (57.5% alcohol by volume / 115 proof) ensuring bold flavor with a kick of its own.

The Double Barrel Bourbon Rodeo whiskey has a velvety mouthfeel with creme brûlée, sweet caramel, and cola flavors highlighted on the palette. The charred oak gives the nose a deep earthiness with notes of vanilla and caramel. The palate is delightfully smooth. The finish is silky with hints of rye spiciness. To best enjoy, serve neat or with one large ice cube.

Pricing and Availability

Samuel Maverick Double Barrel Bourbon Rodeo Edition is available exclusively at the distillery in downtown San Antonio, Texas (115 Broadway, San Antonio, TX 78205) steps from the Alamo and next door to Paris Hatters, another San Antonio Rodeo tradition. Redwood Empire Just Released a Pair of New Whiskeys

February 5, 2024 By Dustin Scoggins

Redwood Empire

California is famous for its wine, but there are far fewer craft whiskey distilleries making fantastic spirits there as well. One of the best is Redwood Empire, a Northern California distillery that just announced the launch of three new whiskeys as part of its Small Lot Series.

Redwood Empire is known for sourcing and blending whiskey from other distilleries as well as producing its own distillate in-house. There have been a few batches of the latter that have caught our attention, specifically a pair of bottled-in-bond (at least four years old, exactly 100 proof) bourbon and rye expressions. The term “small lot” used for these new whiskeys is a bit ambiguous, but it’s essentially similar to “small batch” meaning a smaller amount of whiskey was produced than usual. “Each whiskey in this series is a result of meticulous attention to detail, from grain selection and distillation to barrel aging and blending,” said master distiller Jeff Duckhorn in a statement. “We are excited to see how whiskey enthusiasts and newcomers alike react to these exceptional spirits.”

The first whiskey in the Small Lot Series, Foggy Burl Single Malt Whiskey, was named after a really tall tree in Redwood National Park (you’ll notice a theme here). It’s made from a mashbill of 100 percent malted barley composed of seven different types of malt. According to the distillery, the team has been laying down one barrel of single malt per quarter over the last seven years, and this release is a blend of 27 of those casks. It’s bottled at 94 proof, and has notes of dark chocolate and caramel. The second whiskey is called Devil’s Tower High Rye Bourbon (also named after a massive tree), made from a mashbill of 51 percent corn, 45 percent rye, 2 percent wheat, and 2 percent malted barley. It’s a blend of 25 barrels, bottled at 99 proof, and has sweet and spicy notes on the palate. The third whiskey in the trio is called Screaming Titan Wheated Bourbon (yep, another tree), but this one won’t arrive until March. The mashbill is at least 30 percent wheat, and this is the only one that has sourced whiskey in the blend.

Hayner Releases Path of Totality Bourbon Whiskey

February 5, 2024 By Dustin Scoggins

Hayner Distilling Co.

TROY, OHIO, UNITED STATES — Hayner Distilling, located in Troy, Ohio, has released Path of Totality Bourbon Whiskey. This limited statewide release celebrates the April 8th solar eclipse with Ohio’s first ever illuminated bourbon label.

Path of Totality Bourbon reflects Hayner’s commitment to offer premium whiskeys while also elevating the whiskey experience. Path is a 10-year-old Kentucky bourbon bottled at 100 proof. The bottle premiers Ohio’s first illuminated bourbon label. The label resembles the totality phase of the solar eclipse and the “sun” can be turned on and off with a click of a button.

“We began the design of the illuminated label over a year ago. By the end of 2023 we discovered an incredible rare bourbon that is perfect for this once in a lifetime event. This is a 10-year-old bourbon sourced from Kentucky with a unique 78% corn, 13% rye and 9 % malted barley mash bill,” states Greg Taylor from Hayner Distilling.

Hayner Distilling and its hometown of Troy, Ohio are inside the path of totality during the April 8th eclipse. The city of Troy is celebrating the eclipse with a 3-day festival called Eclipse on the Square. “If you’re seeking a location to view the eclipse, Troy should be on your short list. We have numerous events and bands playing in historic downtown all weekend. We are only a few blocks from downtown and of course encourage everyone to visit Hayner Distilling to pick up a bottle of Path,” stated Greg Taylor.

In addition to being the first ever illuminated bourbon label, the back label has a QR code that offers an augmented reality experience, also a first for a bourbon in the State of Ohio. After scanning the QR code or clicking the link on their website, a bottle virtually appears in your environment. This allows you to view and interact with the bottle before your purchase.

Path of Totality Bourbon goes on sale Saturday, February 3 at Hayner Distilling located at 619 Lincoln Avenue in Troy, Ohio. The bourbon will be available at 29 state liquor stores across Ohio. The 29 stores were intentionally selected as they all lie within the path of totality. The location of each store can be found by searching for Path of Totality at OHLQ.com. The bourbon retails for $89.95.

Hayner Distilling was founded in 1866 in Troy, Ohio along the banks of the Miami River. Hayner quickly grew into one of the largest distilleries in Ohio and became the largest mail order whiskey business in the United States. The distillery closed with prohibition in 1920 and was relaunched in 2021 by Greg Taylor and Andrew Wannemacher.

Longmorn Distillery Just Dropped a Fantastic New 18-Year-Old Whisky

February 5, 2024 By Dustin Scoggins

Longmorn Distillery

In the world of single malt scotch whisky you got your top-tier, instantly recognizable names like The Glenlivet, The Macallan, Glenfiddich, and Laphroaig. Then there are the hidden gems from under-the-radar distilleries that have been cranking out excellent whisky for a century or more without much of a spotlight: The Glendronach, Aultmore, and Tamdhu are a few that come to mind. Add Longmorn to that list, but there’s a good chance this might change with the relaunch of a new 18-year-old single malt that is truly a fantastic whisky.

Longmorn is owned by parent company Pernod Ricard, which also owns better known distilleries like The Glenlivet and Aberlour. The distillery has been around since 1893, and like many others it has gone through several changes of ownership over the years. Although there have been some previous single malt releases since the 1990s, Longmorn has just never achieved the name recognition of some of its contemporaries—perhaps due in part to the whisky being a key component of Chivas Brothers blends. Interestingly, Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Japanese distillery Nikka, worked there for short spell in 1920 to learn the whisky-making trade, and is said to have modeled his distilleries’ stills after Longmorn’s.

Now Longmorn is getting a refresh with the launch of two new expressions that are aimed at the luxury market: 18- and 22-year-old whiskies anchoring the lineup instead of your typical 10- or 12-year-old. Both are very good, but the 18-year-old really hits the sweet spot of maturation. It’s aged in American oak ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads, it’s non-chill filtered (which many believe enhances the flavor), and it’s bottled at cask strength of 57.6 percent ABV. Rich notes of honey and vanilla greet you on the nose, with a hint of cherry syrup and orange, and very little burn despite its high proof. According to Chivas Brothers cask expert Kevin Balmforth, toffee is the signature note of all of Longmorn whiskies. Balmforth has been working with Chivas (now Pernod) distilleries for a quarter of a century, and was involved with the actual distillation of the whisky in the 18-year-old, so it occupies a very special place for him. The toffee note he describes is certainly present here, along with hot honey, mulled cider, salted caramel, butterscotch, and pear flavors.

The 22-year-old is also very good, with those extra four years adding a bit more spice to the palate, but the 18-year-old is really where it’s at. According to Balmforth, these will be ongoing releases in different batches every year, so the makeup of the casks used could vary for future releases—which is something to look forward to based on this inaugural whisky. Longmorn 18 is a fantastic introduction to the distillery for those who are unfamiliar, and will be a welcome refresh of the core lineup for those already in the know. No cask finishing or other whisky gimmicks were used, just the careful selection and blending of some of the distillery’s best barrels resulting in yet another bottle for scotch fans to hunt down.

Four Gate Whiskey “Triple Oak” Limited Edition

February 3, 2024 By Dustin Scoggins

Four Gate Whiskey

Four Gate Whiskey Company (Louisville, KY) is releasing their first whiskey of 2024, “Triple Oak”, a Kentucky Straight Whiskey finished in two different barrels from Kelvin Cooperage.

The underlying seven-year-old Kentucky Straight Whiskey was distilled with a mash bill of 80% corn, 11% rye, and 9% malted barley.  It was initially aged 7 years in used barrels.  Four Gate Whiskey re-barreled the whiskey into new charred barrels from Kelvin Cooperage and then again into new toasted casks, also from Kelvin, resulting in a whiskey that has been aged in three different barrels and aged a total of seven years, nine months.

The idea for a triple oaked whiskey was first proposed a several years ago by the late Kevin McLaughlin of Kelvin Cooperage.  Four Gate Chief Barrel Officer, Bob D’Antoni, kept the idea in the back of his mind until the right whiskey came along to make McLaughlin’s idea reality.  To honor the genesis of the Triple Oak idea, Four Gate has displayed the Kelvin Cooperage Logo on the sub label for the batch. It is the first straight whiskey Four Gate has bottled that doesn’t qualify as a bourbon or rye due to the initial again in previously used cooperage.

“This whiskey really turned out nicely.  It’s a different flavor profile than a lot of our previous offerings,” said Chief Blending Officer Bill Straub.  “There is a distinct semi-sweet pie crust note throughout with green orchard fruits and strong baking spice. I love the unique flavor of this.  Our fans are really going to enjoy it.”

“We are just really thrilled to bring Kevin’s idea to life,” Said D’Antoni, “He was such a great friend to me and to our company and we are confident this whiskey is really worthy of his memory.”

The whiskey was bottled at 53.8% alcohol, or 107.6 proof.  3,798 bottles were produced at a SRP of $199.

PROOF: 107.6 proof (53.8% abv)

AGE: 7 years base

Chicken Cock Whiskey Releases Single Barrel Double Oak Whiskey

February 3, 2024 By Dustin Scoggins

Chicken Cock Whiskey

BARDSTOWN, Ky.— Chicken Cock Whiskey has unveiled an exclusive Single Barrel Double Oak Kentucky Whiskey in partnership with Garden & Gun. Inspired by the South and its time-honored traditions, Chicken Cock Whiskey’s Garden & Gun’s Single Barrel Double Oak is imbued with history and is now available on Chicken Cock’s website and will be available soon in retail stores for $149.99.

Chicken Cock Whiskey’s Master Distiller Gregg Snyder is an avid hunter when he’s not hand selecting white oak for aging spirits, or sampling batches to find the perfect blend of flavors. Snyder describes Garden & Gun’s Single Barrel Double Oak Whiskey as “just phenomenal… full-flavored, full-bodied and smooth,” with a fragrance of caramel coffee and a crème brûlée finish – an ideal bottle to open after an adventurous day of hunting.

“It has the mash bill recipe for bourbon,” explains Chicken Cock Whiskey’s Brand Ambassador Will Woodington. However, due to the American white oak barrel shortage in 2014, the spirit was aged in bourbon barrels for seven years. “Then we finished it in new American white oak barrels to elevate the whiskey to our standards.” For this reason, the spirit cannot be qualified as a bourbon, but rather a Double Oak Kentucky Whiskey, though all other aspects of it align with those of a classic bourbon. Only 12 barrels of this exclusive spirit will be bottled and available for purchase.

“Garden & Gun is thrilled to partner with Chicken Cock Whiskey to present this limited-edition Double Oak single barrel collaboration,” shares Christian Bryant, vice president and publisher of Garden & Gun. “We know our readers will relish the warm and inviting hints of vanilla, steeped berries, and cinnamon. This bottle will add character to any home bar.”

About Chicken Cock Whiskey

Established in 1856, Chicken Cock Whiskey started in the heart of Bourbon County, Kentucky, and in a few short decades became a nationally distributed brand. Chicken Cock hit peak prestige when it was served as the house whiskey at the Cotton Club in Harlem, one of Prohibition’s most legendary speakeasies. The brand managed to survive Prohibition by swiftly moving production around and smuggling bottles into the United States in tin cans. After Prohibition, Chicken Cock enjoyed a resurgence before a distillery fire just after World War II put it out of business. In 2012, Matti Anttila, Grain & Barrel Spirits CEO, rediscovered the brand and set out to resurrect it to its Prohibition-era glory. Since then, the team has introduced a flagship KY Straight Bourbon and KY Straight Rye Whiskey, made in partnership with Bardstown Bourbon Company as part of its collaborative distilling program, along with several other highly sought after limited-releases.

About Grain & Barrel Spirits

Based in Charleston, South Carolina, Grain & Barrel Spirits is an innovative-driven global spirits portfolio that develops and scales authentic brands – connecting the best artisans with markets and consumers around the world. New Riff Distilling Names First Master Distiller, Brian Sprance

February 2, 2024 By Dow Scoggins

Newport, Kentucky — New Riff Distilling announced head distiller Brian Sprance has been named master distiller, the first designation in the distillery’s history. Sprance has been with the company since its inception in 2014.

Ahead of the distillery’s founding in 2014, Sprance was recruited as head distiller by New Riff founder, co-owner and chief executive officer Ken Lewis, who, rather than hiring a distiller, understood that fermentation is where a spirit’s flavors are created; distillation only concentrates them. To Lewis, Sprance’s extensive expertise in fermentation as a former brewer for the Boston Beer Company in Cincinnati spoke for itself.

“When I founded New Riff in 2014, my goal was, and still is, for our Northern Kentucky distillery to become one of the great small distilleries of the world,” Lewis said. “The person at New Riff leading that charge to make world-class whiskey to share with the world is our head distiller Brian Sprance. So it’s fitting as we approach our tenth anniversary, that we recognize Brian for his leadership role in moving us forward toward that aspirational goal and for sharing with us all such outstanding whiskey by conferring on him the well earned title of master distiller.”

Upon joining New Riff, Sprance was mentored by consulting master distiller and “godfather of rye whiskey” Larry Ebersold, an unrivaled authority in the world of distillation and American whiskey. Together with New Riff co-founder Jay Erisman, they launched the distillery and laid the foundation for the flavor profiles of its spirits and aging regimen.

“Larry Ebersold was instrumental in my training as a distiller and I consider myself extremely lucky to count him as a mentor,” Sprancesaid. “Larry was an excellent teacher who rarely gave the answer, but instead, motivated me to reach a full understanding of each situation that presented itself in the whiskey making process. While I consider Larry one of my biggest influences in whiskey today, I’m even luckier to consider him a trusted and valued friend.”

While this transition serves as a unanimous nod to his exceptional contribution to the company’s quest to become one of the greatest small distilleries in the world and a testament to a decade’s worth of profound work mastering his craft, Brian’s primary focus as master distiller will remain in making world-class whiskey.

The master distiller announcement kicks off an eventful year for New Riff that will include expansion into new states, tenth anniversary celebrations and the release of older whiskey.

“2024 will be a transformational year for New Riff,” Lewis said. “The team has put in a lot of work behind the scenes and I’m excited to share those efforts with our customers.”

New Riff (Newport, KY)
New Riff is an independently-owned distillery in Northern Kentucky — the gateway to bourbon country. In 2014, founder Ken Lewis, a visionary Kentucky liquor retailer and entrepreneur, saw a need for a new riff on an old tradition when it came to Kentucky bourbon. The Newport, Ky., distillery produces bourbon, rye and Kentucky Wild Gin. Bourbon and rye are made with traditional sour mash methods and bottled-in-bond without chill filtration. Bourbon and rye are also available in single barrel selections, and the distillery boasts a popular private barrel selection program. New Riff sources its water from an aquifer under the distillery, accessed via a 100’ deep private well and providing water with four times as much dissolved minerals than found in other water supplies. New Riff believes in transparency, so all products feature an age statement and the mashbills are public. The modern venue hosts a variety of events and offers an on-site bar, The Aquifer.

The New Nelson Brothers Maple Cask Finish

January 23, 2024 By Dustin Scoggins

Nelson Bros. Distillery

We’ve covered various cask finishing trends before, from difficult and delicate mizunara oak to the wildly overpowering amburana wood. Another type of barrel used for secondary whiskey maturation that has been gaining in popularity is the maple cask, and the latest example comes from Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery in Tennessee.

The new Nelson Brothers Maple Cask Finish, a bourbon that was finished in barrels previously used to age maple syrup, comes out this Friday. This is the newest entry in the distillery’s Cask Series, which includes other whiskeys finished in barrels previously used to mature cognac, sherry, and Mourvèdre, a type of red wine. This new whiskey is the distillery’s core five-year-old bourbon that was finished for an additional three years in barrels that were used first to mature Nelson Brothers bourbon and then reused to age maple syrup, bringing the wood full circle. “Like all of our cask finishes, we don’t flavor the bourbon with syrup or liqueur,” said lead distiller Ed Kolb in a statement. “[We] infuse it with the rich maple coating of our barrels to create a truly exceptional and limited-edition bourbon.” The whiskey was bottled at 105.8 proof, and has notes of honeysuckle, gingerbread, allspice, and of course maple on the palate.

This new whiskey is far from the only maple-finished release in recent months—we covered the new Very Olde St. Nick Winter Maple recently (which was actually blended with maple syrup as opposed to a cask finish, but close enough). Since the fall, Ohio’s Watershed Distillery released a five-year-old, high-proof bourbon finished in maple barrels; Kentucky’s Town Branch has a bourbon finished in barrels used to age bourbon, maple syrup, and beer in that order; and 291 in Colorado has a barrel-proof rye whiskey finished in Wisconsin maple syrup barrels. These join the ranks of others like Widow Jane’s Decadence, Hudson Whiskey Short Stack, and Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye Maple Finish.

While many of these other whiskeys are readily available to purchase online and at liquor stores, the new Nelson Brothers Maple Cask Finish is a distillery exclusive so you’ll have to head to Nashville to purchase a bottle (SRP $125) starting this Friday.

The Macallan Releases Ultra-Rare 73-Year-Old Scotch for an Eye-Popping $89,000

January 23, 2024 By Dustin Scoggins

The Speyside Distillery

The Speyside distillery’s new, limited-edition whisky is unsurprisingly expensive—and exceedingly hard to find.

Throughout the past decade The Macallan has been busy enshrining itself as the name in ultra-luxury Scotch whisky. But the storied legacy of this Speyside malt-maker actually stretches back for centuries. In fact, 2024 marks the 200th birthday of the brand, and it’s eager to celebrate the milestone with a new release in its ongoing Tales of the Macallan series.

Tales of The Macallan Volume II isn’t some everyday bottle you can rundown at your local liquor store. The whisky was collected from a 1949 vintage and wrested from cask some 73 years later. By that time, what remained of the stock was only enough to fill 344 bespoke Lalique decanters. That precious package will be sold at select boutiques—as well as at The Macallan Estate, in Craigellachie, Scotland—for a cool $89,000 per unit.

If your pockets are adequately deep and you’re lucky enough to encounter one in the wild, you’ll be met by a 44.8 percent ABV liquid that’s especially auburn in hue and abnormally smoky in flavor compared to the typical house style. This is all by design, according to Euan Kennedy, The Macallan’s lead whisky maker. He took inspiration from the distillery’s original founder, Alexander Reid, whose surname means “the Red One” in Scots.

“Displaying beautiful tones of bronzed oak and subtle red hues, this rare and unique single-malt whisky possesses an incredible complexity achieved through age and patient maturation,” says Kennedy. “Enjoying a lingering smokiness redolent of whiskies of Alexander’s time, it’s a fitting tribute to his living legacy as we celebrate our 200th anniversary year.”

The new release is a followup to Tales of the Macallan Volume I, which debuted in the summer of 2021. The original was more of a citrus-forward affair, though equally as elusive and sporting nearly the same age and ABV. Also like its predecessor, the new edition is inlayed within hand-crafted leather-bound tomes. Volume II comprises 800 pages worth of paper, arranged by an artisan printer out of Paris. More than just a set piece, each chapter of the book actually tells tales of Alexander Reid and features illustrative accompaniment from renowned British illustrator Andrew Davidson.

At any rate, you’re just as unlikely to actually sip Tales of the Macallan Volume II as someone who manages to purchase it. Because most of the folks who do, will preserve it as a collectible keepsake rather than drinkable dram. It’s lamentable, but a tale we keep having to tell in this modern era of ultra-luxury spirits.
