Jim Beam Is Bringing Back the Fan Favorite 13-Year-Old Baker’s Bourbon

August 25, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

The Jim Beam Small Batch Bourbon Collection is best known for three expressions in particular: Knob Creek, Booker’s, and Basil Hayden. But there’s a lesser known fourth member, Baker’s, that has been getting some renewed attention over the past few years. And now the older, single-barrel version of that whiskey has returned for the first time since 2019.

Baker’s Bourbon is produced at the James B. Beam Distilling Co., the home of the world-famous and best-selling Jim Beam Bourbon. The whiskey is named after Baker Beam, the grandnephew of Jim Beam himself and a distiller who worked at the distillery for nearly four decades. Baker’s relaunched in 2019 as a 107-proof, single-barrel bourbon aged for at least seven years, an impressive refresh of this whiskey. Despite all that, Baker’s just isn’t as well recognized as the other whiskeys in the Small Batch Collection, perhaps due to the more intense marketing push they tend to get.

In 2019, Beam Suntory (the parent company of Jim Beam) also released Baker’s as a limited-edition 13-year-old expression, and the reviews were favorable. The very nature of a single barrel whiskey means that each bottle will vary in flavor depending on which cask it came from, but overall you can expect notes of oak, vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar on the palate. “Baker’s Bourbon celebrates the individual characteristics in each and every barrel, and this 13 Year Old expression takes that experience even further as the distinct flavors from the barrel develop over time,” said Fred Noe, seventh generation master distiller, in a press release. “We received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback the first time we released this 13-year-old edition, and I’m proud to bring it back for whiskey fans who appreciate something special from Baker’s as a true gem within our Small Batch portfolio.”

Recognizing how eager whiskey fans are for transparency and obtaining as much information about a bottle as they possibly can, Beam set up a “single barrel journey” website for Baker’s. Here, you can enter the serial number from the bottle and find out information on exact age, warehouse location, and even how the weather affected the flavor of the bourbon. Baker’s 13 Year Old is available now (SRP $130) —but this limited release is only available in select states. You can also find the regular seven-year-old version of Baker’s available from ReserveBar, and that’s a pretty good bourbon to drink too.

Green River Distilling Releases Full Proof Single Barrel Bourbon

August 25, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Green River Distilling

Green River Distilling Co. recently launched the Green River Full Proof Single Barrel Bourbon. This is the first of a very promising line of single barrel bottlings set to be released exclusively at the distillery’s gift shop. This revitalized distillery changed ownership and head distiller not long after their first release hit the shelves last year. Given the quality of this sample, the new crew is continuing towards a very bright future.

Change is an old concept at Green River Distilling Co. Originally established in 1885 by John W. McCulloch in Owensboro, KY, Green River was granted the DSP-KY-10 (DSP stands for Distilled Spirits Producer). After a fire in 1914 wiped out the production area shortly before Prohibition, the distillery closed.

The property was rebuilt and passed through a series of investors over the years with limited success before being acquired by the Terressentia Corporation in 2014. Ron Call, a long-time distiller who worked for Jim Beam and the Florida Caribbean Distillers, oversaw the renovations of the property to restore it more closely to its original design.

In 2016, whiskey aging began under the O. Z. Taylor name. The same year, Ron’s son, Jacob Call, a well-respected distiller in his own right, took over as head distiller for the company.

In 2020, the company purchased the rights to Green River Distilling Co. name with the blessing of McCulloch’s great grandson, Rob McCulloch. In homage to the original company’s designs, the bottle heavily features a horseshoe motif and the dark green color of the original labels.

In the summer of 2022, only a few months after their first release launched, Bardstown Bourbon Company purchased Green River. Bardstown is a regarded contract distillery receiving wide praise for their collaborations and house releases. Owned by Pritzker Private Capital, Bardstown has collaborated with several big names in the alcohol industry, including Coors and Kentucky Owl.

Call stepped down as head distiller as part of the sale, and Aaron Harris took over as Master Distiller in the fall of 2022. Harris selected the barrel for this bourbon from Warehouse B, which he says is “loaded with honey barrels,” so expect more to come. It was bottled at barrel proof.

Like their Kentucky Bourbon and Wheated Bourbon, the corn for the mash is all Kentucky-grown and is purchased from local farmers. Harris describes the first release as “a rousing blend of spirituous vanilla and baking spices, coating the palate with creamy honey.”

Tasting Notes: Green River Full Proof Single Barrel Bourbon

Vital Stats: Aged for at least five years in new American oak, 59.5% ABV, mash bill: 70% Kentucky corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley, SRP $59.99/ 750ml bottle.

Heaven Hill’s Newest Unicorn Whiskey Is a 10-Year-Old Cask Strength Rye

August 24, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Heaven Hill Distillery

Heaven Hill just announced details of the new edition of its Parker’s Heritage Collection, the top-tier whiskey line from this venerable Kentucky distillery. This time the liquid is pretty straightforward—a 10-year-old rye whiskey bottled at cask strength—but that surely won’t stop collectors from snapping this bottle up.

Parker’s Heritage Collection is named after the late Heaven Hill master distiller Parker Beam who was diagnosed with ALS in 2010. A portion of the proceeds from this 17th edition, like past releases, will go to benefit ALS research. Since 2013, the distillery says it has raised more than a million dollars for the cause. So what’s in this new bottle? As mentioned before, this is a 10-year-old rye made in the Kentucky style from a mashbill of 51 percent rye, 35 percent corn, and 14 percent malted barley. According to Heaven Hill, the whiskey was barreled in August, October, or December of 2012. If you are a whiskey fan who really likes to get into the weeds of the terroir and climate of maturation, the barrels were located on the first floors of Rickhouses H1 and H2, the fifth floor of Rickhouse FF, the third and seventh floors of Rickhouse BB, and the second floor of Rickhouse DD. Lastly, the whiskey is non-chill filtered and bottled at cask strength of 128.8 proof.

Each edition of Parker’s Heritage Collection is different—some are more traditional whiskeys while others veer more toward the experimental. For example, last year’s release was a blend of 15-year-old bourbon and double-barreled 13-year-old bourbon, 2018 unveiled a bourbon finished in orange Curaçao barrels, 2015 was a malt whiskey, and 2021 was a wheat whiskey aged in heavily charred barrels. A 10-year-old rye whiskey, even at cask strength, is not necessarily the most unique innovation in the whiskey world, but it all comes down to the flavor. We got to try a sample of this whiskey, and it’s a richly flavored rye that definitely comes in hot. Once that alcohol burn subsides, there are nice notes of candied orange, peach jelly, vanilla, caramel, black pepper, and cayenne. A little bit of water would go a long way here, but this whiskey will be worth the price for dedicated fans of this Heaven Hill collection and high-proof rye whiskeys.

Speaking of which, the SRP is $185 for this allocated release which goes on sale next month. But you can still find previous years’ releases for sale (for wildly inflated prices) like the 2021 expression and the 2018 cask-finished expression from Drizly. It’s never too late to start your own collection!

Widow Jane Releases Paradigm Rye, A Spirit Including Whiskey From Its Own Stills

August 24, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Widow Jane

Widow Jane has launched a new rye, the latest in the Brooklyn distillery’s collection of small-batch whiskeys.

A statement from Widow Jane noted that their new Paradigm Rye will have a “soft rollout” in key markets, then the new rye whiskey will hit shelves across the U.S. later this summer.

Paradigm Rye is the first nationally available Widow Jane product that’s made up of whiskey distilled at the brand’s home on Conover Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

For a half decade now, the Widow Jane team has filled barrels of rye whiskey distilled in-house, and with the earliest barrels now mature, it’s been blended with hand-selected ryes from Kentucky and Indiana.

Widow Jane’s head distiller and blender, Sienna Jevremov, said the goal with Paradigm is to “reset the standard for great rye whiskey that spotlights equally the arts of distilling, blending, and finishing, which embodies what we do here at Widow Jane. Paradigm Rye follows the brand’s history of bringing an unusual, fruit forward profile in a rye, backed up with the spice that bartenders seek for cocktails.”

Paradigm Rye is non-chill filtered and proofed with limestone mineral water from the Rosendale Mines of New York.

The distiller’s notes show that on the nose, the rye whiskey has aromas of lemon meringue pie, spring flowers, cut grass, and lychee. The palate tastes of buttered rye toast, mandarin marmalade, cedar, and white pepper. It finishes with hints of thyme, artichoke, Earl Grey tea, sandalwood, and peach.

Filmland Spirits Releases First Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Cask Strength Expression of Award-Winning Rye

August 23, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Filmland Spirits

LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Filmland Spirits announces the debut of two new American Whiskeys crafted to expand its award-winning portfolio. Town at the End of Tomorrow, a 9-year-old Kentucky Bourbon, and the long-awaited Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut will premiere at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, September 15-17, 2023.

Founded in 2020, Filmland Spirits was born from an enthusiasm for whiskey, a passion for movies and a dedication to story-telling. The Filmland team believes that every whiskey has a story, and every story deserves a whiskey. The result is a wildly creative pairing of an original retro B-Movie concept – complete with monsters, robots and over-the-top plots – with a delicious and unique whiskey – each of which has already won a Gold Medal or higher.  Even the bottles tell part of the story as they are custom designed to reflect an art deco style reminiscent of the movie houses of old and feature movie posters as labels.

Town at the End of Tomorrow features a cast of 78% Corn and 13% Rye with 9% Malted Barley in a supporting role. Distilled and aged in Kentucky and blended by the award-wining team at Filmland Spirits, Town at the End of Tomorrow is aged for 9 years in American White Oak and bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV).

In keeping with the Filmland Spirits creative process, Town at the End of Tomorrow was inspired by their original B-movie concept. This story tells the tale of a grim future overshadowed by bourbon shortages and the outlawing of spirits older than two years. New Bardstown is now the center of the whiskey universe and home to distillers Connor and Emerald Cooper who long for the finely aged bourbons of years gone by. Together they travel back through time to the birth of America’s native spirit – where they must confront their teetotaling forefather Judge Barker in an epic battle for the bourbon ages.

“Town at the End of Tomorrow is a celebration of bourbon’s past and future and to bring this tale to life, we knew we needed a Kentucky product,” said Troy Bolotnick, Founder and CEO, Filmland Spirits. “We found a blockbuster liquid worthy of our concept and are thrilled to premiere it in Bardstown, Kentucky during the Bourbon Festival.”

Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut is the long-awaited cask strength version of the fan favorite Ryes of the Robots. Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut is aged for 5 years in American White Oak, bottled at cask strength 108 Proof (54% ABV) and features a mash of 95% Rye with 5% Malted Barley in a supporting role.  Like any movie that receives the extended cut treatment, Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut features deleted scenes that continue the tale of bartender turned hero Courtney Winters as she seeks to defend the art of craft cocktail making from an army of robotic bartenders.

The two new products will be available for pre-order on August 23. Town at the End of Tomorrow, Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut and the rest of the Filmland portfolio is available in California, Kentucky, Nevada, Washington, Arizona and Alaska and online. The Filmland Spirits portfolio includes:

Normandie, which was named one of the “12 Best New Spirits of the Year” by Robb Report, offers Whiskey Del Bac’s Classic American Single Malt whiskey aged in charred, new American white oak barrels, then finished in ex-Calvados brandy barrels. This small-batch whiskey release is named after the coastal region of Normandie, France, which is known for its creamy cheeses, rich seafood, and an abundance of apples and pears.

Also, only 1,400 bottles were produced nationwide and Normandie is officially back in stock (for a limited time) in Whiskey Del Bac’s online store.

The new spirit is part of Whiskey Del Bac’s Global Cask Collection, a collection of annual releases inspired by places around the world where oak barrels are used to age wines or spirits. The collection includes Spanish sherry-inspired Frontera, the heavily-smoked Isley-inspired Ode to Islay, and Normandie with its French-inspired Calvados brandy finish.

“It’s a journey to the coastal region of France, as the Calvados barrels impart flavors of green apple and citrus with hints of cherry and freshly-cut flowers that counterbalance the traditionally heavy notes of our unsmoked single malts,” said Vierthaler. “It’s the perfect blend for fall.”

Gimlet’s Apollo Inn releases whiskey with The Gospel

August 20, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Apollo Inn Trader House’s Apollo Inn is celebrating its opening with an exclusive rye whiskey crafted with Melbourne distillers The Gospel.

The Gospel Projects High Wheat is the work of Apollo Inn Bar Manager Cameron Parish and The Gospel Co-Founder Ben Bowles.

The duo teamed up to select a single cask for the tipple, which was then double-barrelled for three years before release.

“When we were approached by Cam and the team to celebrate the opening of their new venue Apollo Inn, we wanted to honour their renowned level of hospitality by creating an equally refined whiskey,” says Bowles.

The Gospel Projects High Wheat features notes of toasted chestnut with salted caramel, toffee apple, and cherry wood.

“My initial brief to The Gospel was to find something similar to what I enjoy an American rye whiskey with a heavy charred cask – wanting to bring an added richness to the dry style typical of rye whiskey,” says Parish.

“When he talked me through the mash bill of the High Wheat and the double-barrel maturation, inclusive of a heavy toast barrel, it matched perfectly to what I was looking for – there’s a sweetness, richness, and toastiness to the whiskey.”

Parish and the team are serving up the whiskey at Apollo Inn through two new cocktails.

The Cablegram is the venue’s take on a whiskey highball which also sees toasted soba, black lime, and ginger wine added.

The Manhattan Number 6 showcases the whiskey accompanied by dry vermouth and Cocchi Americano.

The Gospel Projects High Wheat is available at Apollo Inn and online through The Gospel.

About the Gospel Projects from Apollo Inn

The Gospel are the only dedicated rye whiskey distillery in Australia, bringing a distinctly Australian approach and flavour to a traditional American whiskey style. Under the guidance of Master Distiller Ian Thorn, The Gospel distils, ages and bottles right here in Melbourne.

As part of their Project Release programme, we’ve selected a single cask of whiskey bottled just for Apollo Inn. We can assure you that it’s exceptional and something hereto unseen in The Gospel’s range.

We launched this limited-release whiskey at Apollo Inn on Tuesday 8th August with a special tasting and cocktails created by Cam Parish. We’ll be pouring the whiskey exclusively at Apollo Inn, with a special few bottles available for purchase directly from The Gospel.

WhistlePig unveils its rarest release: Farmstock Rye

August 16, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Whistlepig WhiskeyVermont-based producer WhistlePig has bottled its annual limited edition farm-to-bottle whiskey series: FarmStock Beyond Bonded.

Described as the brand’s ‘most ambitious whiskey experiment’, the expressions in the WhistlePig FarmStock Beyond Bonded series have been bottled in bond, having been harvested and distilled at the WhistlePig farm and distillery in Shoreham, Vermont in one season.

“FarmStock Beyond Bonded is at the heart of our strongest commitments to the whiskey world,” said Meghan Ireland, chief blender at WhistlePig.

“First, to relentlessly experiment to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Beyond Bonded is our greatest experiment in that we can control every detail of the process here on the farm.

“Then, to turn that innovative spirit into whiskeys that are truly unique in quality and complexity. It started with rye, and we’re having a grand time doing the same with Bourbon, wheat and other whiskeys.”

For the first time, this year’s FarmStock Beyond Bonded release includes a straight wheat whiskey, straight rye whiskey and a straight Bourbon whiskey.
The three WhistlePig FarmStock Beyond Bonded expressions, all of which rest at 50% ABV, are the product of grains from the brand’s nine grain fields across 500 acres.

All have been distilled and proofed with the farm’s own well water, and aged in their own sustainably-harvested Vermont oak.

WhistlePig said the range is its rarest release with just 23 barrels produced, each of which has been bottled as a single barrel, and are fully traceable at every step of the grain-to-glass journey via a QR code located on each bottle.

The distillery produced 11 barrels of the rye, nine barrels of the Bourbon, and three barrels of wheat whiskey.

The straight wheat whiskey joins the line-up with a mash bill of 100% wheat from WhistlePig’s experimental crop fields, bringing a ‘softer style’ to the range.

WhistlePig has experimented with wheat whiskey within all of its annual ‘Stock’ limited editions.

HomeStock Whiskey, released in 2020, and this year’s SummerStock Whiskey, both include wheat whiskey blended with rye and other grains.

FarmStock Beyond Bonded marks WhistlePig’s first straight wheat whiskey, and is said to demonstrate WhistlePig’s continued expansion beyond rye as it takes its bold style and experimental approach to new categories.

As a nod to WhistlePig’s beginnings at Vermont farmers markets, this year’s release of FarmStock Beyond Bonded can only be found only in its home state until the end of summer.

Lawrenceburg, Ind. — Ross & Squibb Distillery announced the newest member of the Rossville Union Straight Rye Whiskey brand family: Rossville Union Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey. Hand-selected by Ross & Squibb Distillery Master Distiller Ian Stirsman, Rossville Union Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey is set for limited release of 3,000, 6-in cases in time for National Rye Month this month and will be available at select retailers at a suggested price of $49.99 per 700 ml bottle.

Aged six years and offered at 100 proof, Rossville Union Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey features a mash bill consisting of 51% rye and 49% barley malt. This release was distilled in March of 2017.

“I’m proud to continue Ross & Squibb’s tradition of creating high-quality rye whiskey that dates back to 1847. Since that time, we have worked to perfect our craft, giving our rye whiskeys unmatched character,” said Stirsman. “For our Rossville Union Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey we combined our industry leading rye expertise with a new high malt mashbill to create something truly special.  We then let the barrels mature for a minimum of 6 years, resulting in aromas of sweet malt, dark chocolate, raisin and saddle leather with tasting notes highlighted by caramel and mocha with a rich, candied-fruit body, followed by a slight green-apple, malted-chocolate and cinnamon finish.”

“With the growing American whiskey market, compounded by the craft-cocktail revival across America, we are seeing a growing interest and demand for dark, more-complex spirits,” said Shanae Randolph, Marketing Director-Brands for MGP’s Luxco Branded Spirits. “Rossville Union Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey arrives at just the right time, as it is made the way rye whiskeys are supposed to be and is perfect in cocktails made the way they used to be.”

Maker’s Mark Is Releasing Its Oldest Bourbon Ever Next Month

August 16, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Makers MarkMaker’s Mark is one of those quietly appreciated bourbon brands, churning out reliable, high-quality whiskey minus the fanfare that other distilleries sometimes operate under. One thing that has been on many whiskey fans’ wishlists, however, is an older, age-stated expression from Maker’s. At long last, that has arrived in the form of Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged, and we got an early preview of the liquid.

I visited the distillery earlier this month to taste the new bourbon and talk to the team about how it came to be. Regular Maker’s is aged for an average of six to seven years, and according to a rep for the brand every single barrel is rotated by hand and moved from the upper levels of the rickhouses down to the lower levels to ensure flavor consistency. Innovation manager Beth Buckner said that even with that barrel rotation, Maker’s aged for much longer doesn’t quite fit the brand’s “taste vision.” “The number one objective for our taste vision is ‘yummy,’ which for us means bitter free,” she said. “For years, people asked if we could go older. . .We listen to what consumers want, but we’re never gonna innovate solely on that. If we did, we’d have RTDs and all of these trends that last three years and then [disappear].”

That all changed when the distillery opened its proprietary limestone maturation cellar in 2016. The temperature here is always 50 degrees or colder, making this an environment more akin to Scotland than Kentucky. “What if you could take fully mature Maker’s Mark and move it out of the warehouse and into the cellar?” said Buckner. “You change the aging environment where you stop or slow the tannic extraction from the barrel, but allow the whiskey to continue to oxidize and age and create more complex flavor notes.”
That’s exactly what they did, moving six-year-old bourbon from the rickhouses into the cellar to mature for another five to six years. The final blend of Cellar Aged is 13 percent 11-year-old bourbon and 87 percent 12-year-old bourbon bottled at cask strength of 115.7 proof (the TTB label some people saw online erroneously had the proof at 90). According to senior director and head of innovation, Blake Layfield, they sampled about 100 different blends before deciding on the final one.

Cellar Aged is a delicious bourbon, starting off with a strong whiff of honey on the nose. It’s still recognizably Maker’s Mark on the palate, but with deeper, more tannic notes and a huge amount of fruit. There is dried fruit and fresh dark berries, along with caramel, citrus, cinnamon, and other baking spices, and just a hint of menthol on the finish. I was able to sample a 12-year-old Maker’s bourbon aged entirely in the rickhouses to compare, and while that was also pretty good the palate was entirely different with much drier oaky notes.

Buckner said there are more barrels aging in the cellar, and that Cellar Aged will be an annual release going forward with the ages and percentages of the whiskey in the blend changing each year. 30,000 bottles are being released globally, and the whiskey will be available here in the U.S. in September. The price tag is $150, but who knows if this whiskey will go the way of Russell’s Reserve 13 Year Old and sell for triple that on the secondary market. In the meantime, you can find the entire Maker’s Mark lineup, including some of the recent Wood Finishing Series releases, available for purchase from ReserveBar.
