James B. Beam Distilling Relaunches Old Tub Bourbon For A Limited Time As A Tribute To Its First Groundbreaking Whiskey

June 29, 2020 By Dow Scoggins

Old Tub Bourbon from James B. Beam Distilling CHICAGO  — Today, the James B. Beam Distilling Co. announced the re-release of Old Tub®, an unfiltered, 100-proof bonded bourbon inspired by the oldest brand from the Beam family. This limited-edition throwback offering celebrates bourbon’s true, rustic character, will be widely available in late June.

Old Tub Bourbon is distilled without chill filtration to showcase its unique qualities reminiscent of the world’s oldest bourbons. Just like the original Old Tub recipe, the liquid skips the chill filtration process, which forces the liquid through a dense filter to remove fatty acids during distillation, resulting in a bonded bourbon with a full-bodied authentic flavor.

The limited-edition offering is a nostalgic nod to where it all began for the Beam family over 140 years ago in Bardstown, KY, which is otherwise known as the Bourbon Capital of the World. This unique bourbon has tasting notes that include oak, complemented along with grain and warm caramel. It has a lingering color of golden citrine gemstone with shades of honey and an aroma that carries initial waves of oak followed by vanilla and grain.

“We’re taking bourbon lovers back in time and making a delicious bourbon true to the way my ancestors intended over 140 years ago when Old Tub was first crafted,” said Fred Noe, seventh-generation master distiller. “I’m excited to share this one-of-a-kind liquid with our fans and provide a bit of authenticity and nostalgia as we head towards another 225 years in the bourbon industry.”

Old Tub Bourbon is best enjoyed neat or in classic cocktails like an Old Fashioned or a Brown Derby, which includes bourbon, grapefruit juice, and honey syrup. It will be available for a limited time at select retailers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $22.99 for 750mL.

Diageo launches $100 million recovery fund to help pubs and bars welcome back customers after lockdown

June 26, 2020 By Dow Scoggins

Diageo recovery fund - $100 million to help pubs and bars Diageo, the maker of GUINNESS, has today announced a new global program to support pubs and bars to welcome customers back and recover following the COVID-19 pandemic. “Raising the Bar” will be a two-year program available from July 2020.

Through “Raising the Bar”, Diageo recovery fund will provide $100 million to support the recovery of major hospitality centers, including New York, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Sydney and beyond. This $100 million program includes the $20 million Community Fund announced in the United States on 12 June 2020.

Diageo designed the “Raising the Bar” program following a global survey of bar owners to identify what they need to reopen after lockdown. Their top priorities include hygiene measures, digital support, and practical equipment to transform how their outlets will work.

The “Raising the Bar” program will provide targeted support to help pay for the physical equipment needed for outlets to re-open. For example, in the UK, Diageo will provide initial funding for: ‘hygiene kits’ with high-quality permanent sanitizer dispense units, medical-grade hand sanitizer and a range of personal protection equipment (such as masks and gloves); help to pubs and bars to establish partnerships with online reservations and cashless systems; mobile bars and outdoor equipment.

From June 24, 2020, bar owners will be able to register their interest in the “Raising the Bar” program via www.diageobaracademy.com globally and www.mydiageo.com in the UK and Ireland. Bar owners will receive regular updates on best practice training and resources and be able to participate in global surveys to share insights, as they build back their businesses.

Ivan Menezes, Chief Executive of Diageo commented: ‘Pubs and bars sit at the heart of every community. We have launched “Raising the Bar” as so many outlets have been impacted by this crisis and badly need help to open their doors again.’

‘We are calling on governments around the world to provide long-term recovery packages to help the hospitality sector. These businesses play an essential role in bringing people together to socialize and celebrate – something that we have all missed so much during this terrible crisis – and sustain hundreds of millions of jobs, which provide the first foot on the employment ladder for young people.’

The UN’s International Labour Organization has forecast that 436 million enterprises worldwide face serious disruption and one in six young people will be unemployed due to COVID-19. The hospitality sector will be one of the hardest hit, like pubs, bars, clubs, and restaurants provide hundreds of millions of jobs for many full and part-time workers.

The impact of COVID-19 on the hospitality sector has been widespread, with the closure of venues the world over. As governments begin to ease lockdown measures, the public wants to come together again to connect with their community and socialize safely. By providing access to free digital support, technology, training, and equipment, Diageo aims to help bars open their doors again.

George Garvin Brown was a pharmaceutical salesman and became the first to seal his whiskey, Old Forester, in a glass bottle – an innovation the spirit industry still uses today. Old Forester's Birthday BourbonThe 2020 Old Forester Birthday Bourbon will be bottled at 98 proof and is made up of 95 barrels, aged 10 years, and barreled on June 5, 2010. After showing exceptionally unique character during a tasting panel, the 10-year-old barrels were chosen specifically for this year’s Birthday Bourbon. The full allotment of the product represents one day’s production of Old Forester.

“Being part of the Old Forester Birthday Bourbon selection process is one of my favorite parts of my job because of the legacy and tradition this expression represents,” said Jackie Zykan, Old Forester Master Taster. “We’re really proud of what we’ve produced this year and think it’s a great way to celebrate George’s birthday and Old Forester’s historic anniversary.”

This is the third Birthday Bourbon to be bottled at the Old Forester Distilling Co. on Louisville’s Historic Whiskey Row. Its annual release has become something that bourbon lovers anticipate, and we really believe that the 2020 version is one of our best yet.”

291 Colorado Straight Rye Whiskey (Batch #1)
Loads of rich caramel and toffee up front on the nose. Leather and pipe tobacco add an earthiness, while cinnamon and clove balance it out with some spice. Hints of toasted oak and aspen round out the nose. The palate is viscous, with the clove, toffee, tobacco, and toasted oak at the forefront. There is a warming black pepper note with the return of the caramel for the long, pleasant finish. This is an assertive and spice forward rye, and yet somehow, at the same, soft and sweet rye. Made from malted rye and corn mash. 64.3% Alc/Vol – 128.6 PROOF

291 Colorado Straight Bourbon Whiskey (Batch #1)
The nose is full of assorted stone fruits such as apricots, nectarines, and peach cobbler, along with floral potpourri. Herbal tea, mint, and black pepper add spiciness and depth to the nose, while cedar and aspen dance around on the edges. The stone fruits are the first to greet the palate, along with the mint and herbal tea. The texture is surprisingly soft, especially given the high proof. The clove and black pepper spices quickly move in as it transitions to a lively finish with apricots, aspen, and floral notes. Made from corn, malted rye, malted barley mash. 66.9% Alc/Vol – 133.8 PROOF

National Bourbon Day – June 14th

June 15, 2020 By Dow Scoggins

National Bourbon Day - June 14thThere is something about bourbon that’s captured our global attention. In North America, sales have soared and in the U.S., where bourbon originates, one of the nation’s most popular whiskey makers reversed a decision to water down its recipe in an effort to meet worldwide demand. This country needs National Bourbon Day.

Some say the rise in bourbon sales is due to the growth of small-batch and single barrel bourbon in the 1990s, while others say it has to do with the resurgence in popularity of hard-liquor swilling characters and settings on television shows such as Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. Whatever the reason, you’ll want to raise a glass of the sweetened amber spirit June 14 as the world celebrates the splendor of this great whiskey on National Bourbon Day!

Legal Definition of Bourbon
Bourbon’s legal definition varies somewhat from country to country, but many trade agreements require that the name “bourbon” be reserved for products made in the United States. The U.S. regulations for labeling and advertising bourbon apply only to products made for consumption within the United States; they do not apply to distilled spirits made for export. Canadian law requires products labeled bourbon to be made in the United States and also to conform to the requirements that apply within the United States. But in countries other than the United States and Canada, products labeled bourbon may not adhere to the same standards. For example, in the European Union, products labeled as bourbon are not required to conform to all the regulations that apply within the United States, although they still must be made in the U.S.

The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits, codified under 27 CFR §5.22(b)(1)(i), states bourbon made for U.S. consumption must be:

Produced in the United States
Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn
Aged in new, charred oak containers
Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume)
Entered into the container for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume)
Bottled (like other whiskeys) at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume)

Bourbon has no minimum specified duration for its aging period. Products aged for as little as three months are sold as bourbon. The exception is straight bourbon, which has a minimum aging requirement of two years. In addition, any bourbon aged less than four years must include an age statement on its label.
Bourbon that meets the above requirements, has been aged for a minimum of two years, and does not have added coloring, flavoring, or other spirits may be – but is not required to be – called straight bourbon.

A bourbon that is labeled as straight that has been aged under four years must be labeled with the duration of its aging.
Bourbon that has an age stated on its label must be labeled with the age of the youngest whiskey in the bottle (not counting the age of any added neutral grain spirits in a bourbon that is labeled as blended, as neutral-grain spirits are not considered whiskey under the regulations and are not required to be aged at all).

Bottled-in-bond bourbon is a sub-category of straight bourbon and must be aged at least four years.

Devils River Whiskey Adds Cold Brew Blend To Wake Up Your Spirit

June 10, 2020 By Dow Scoggins

Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey, a San Francisco World Spirits Competition Gold MedalSAN ANTONIO, Texas – Devils River Whiskey, maker of premium small-batch whiskeys, announces the launch of Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey, a San Francisco World Spirits Competition Gold Medal winner and a rich, smoky addition to their family of whiskies.

When it comes to popular drinks, coffee and whiskey score pretty high up on the list. So what do you get when you combine them in one bottle? A heavenly fusion of flavors and the makings of an instant classic.

“We believe coffee and whiskey are natural companions. Both have intense character and intricate processes,” says Mike Cameron, co-founder, and Distiller of Devils River Whiskey. “We decided to take on the challenge of marrying these two beverages into one sinfully smooth whiskey. With our emphasis on quality and technique, they’re a match made in bourbon whiskey heaven.”

The Texas-based team chose a local San Antonio coffee roastery with standards to match its own meticulous distilling process. All of the beans are “fair trade” and come responsibly sourced from Columbia, Brazil, and Honduras.

“After trying a variety of roasting styles, we found that the dark Vienna Roast best compliments our whiskey, adding another layer to its deep flavor profile,” states Cameron. “The Vienna Roast is the most difficult roast to achieve on a consistent basis, so of course we had to take on the challenge. Besides being darker, richer and more aromatic, this blend has a full body that features caramel, citrus, and berry notes with a rich, satisfying finish.”

But the team at Devils Whiskey didn’t stop there. To further enhance the flavor of their Coffee Bourbon, they opted for a cold brew process. “During our research, we discovered hot brewing forces the flavor from the bean, but cold brew likes to take its own sweet time,” says Devils River Whiskey Vice President of Marketing, Eric Hundelt. “We steep our Devils River Bourbon with the dark roasted Vienna coffee beans for at least 24 hours at a low temperature to bring out the smooth, sweet flavor cold brew coffees are known for.”

As if adding a jolt of java to a world-class whiskey isn’t enough, the Coffee Bourbon is then naturally infused with 100% blue weber agave nectar to mellow the finish and add a touch of sweetness. The result: a perfectly balanced, premium drinking experience.

“The gold medal our Coffee Bourbon won at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition was a great honor to receive prior to the launch of this expression,” says John Potts, Devils River Whiskey Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “It supported the hundreds of hours of research, planning, and work that went into making this idea a reality.”

At 80-proof, you can enjoy Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey like any traditional whiskey: neat, on the rocks or in your favorite cocktail. Natural oils from the dark roasted beans provide a creamy mouthfeel, while touches of dark chocolate and spice permeate its understated coffee flavor. Soft on the palate, this high rye bourbon has a warm, soothing, and perfectly balanced finish.

Its subtle coffee aroma balanced with caramel, smoke and a touch of fruit, makes Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey a great cocktail companion. Here are a few great recipes!

June 8, 2020 By Dow Scoggins

SanTan Spirits Whiskeys, Vodkas and GinsCHANDLER, Arizona — SanTan Spirits, the distilling side of SanTan Brewing Company, is now making its award-winning whiskeys, vodkas and gins available through Crescent Crown Distributing (CCD). SanTan is Arizona’s largest brewery and now, it’s Arizona’s largest distillery. This move to the CCD portfolio allows for more widespread availability in the market.

“We’re thrilled to now have all of our SanTan beverages distributed by the finest distributors in the state. Housing our brands under one roof will give us access to a larger number of retail locations and make our products more accessible,” said Anthony Canecchia, founder + brewmaster, SanTan Spirits and SanTan Brewing Company.

SanTan Spirits began in 2015 with a mission to re-image what craft spirits could be, creating uncommon quality for everyday occasions. SanTan Spirits are made to be approachable and enjoyed best while among friends. SanTan Spirits have been recognized in many national beverage competitions including the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition and most recently, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition where Butcher Jones Straight Rye Whiskey, Cask Strength, took home a gold medal.

“We are very excited to be representing the crafted spirits from SanTan. We have proudly represented the beers for over a decade and now, being able to offer the full award-winning product line will benefit everyone. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Joe Cotroneo, EVP General Manager, Crescent Crown Distributing, Arizona.
