291 Colorado Whiskey Releases Wheated Bourbon Made for Summer

August 9, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

291 Colorado WhiskeyCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Award-winning distillery, 291 Colorado Whiskey, is thrilled to announce the release of 291 E Colorado Whiskey Batch 12, a four-grain wheated bourbon and its first experimental wheated bourbon presented since the 2013 release of 291 Bad Guy Bourbon. E Colorado Whiskey Batch 12 is an easy drinking, toast to Summer. The “Bad Guy”, released every Fall, was 291 Founding Distiller Michael Myers’ third mash bill and has been a cult favorite of 291 Colorado Whiskey fans since 2013.

Bottled at 121.6 proof, 291 E Colorado Whiskey Batch 12 (MSRP $149.99) is a marriage of barrels from two different wheated bourbon experiments, when combined resulted in a four-grain mash bill. Head Distiller Eric Jett filled the first barrels in 2018, while the founder’s batch was distilled in 2021. Myers was made with corn, malted white wheat, and rye malt; and the other created by Jett, was made with corn, malted white wheat, and malted barley.

“With a commitment to producing exceptional handcrafted American whiskey, we are proud of the release of Batch 12 which highlights 291’s dedication to innovation and experimentation,” said Myers. “This is an approachable bourbon and is a nod to summer, with notes of cinnamon graham cracker, big league chew bubble gum, sweet tarts and hot tamales candies and toasted marshmallow.”

To date twelve batches of experimental Colorado whiskey have been released by the emerging 291 brand. Each “E” Batch is an opportunity to test new ideas and create one-of-a-kind whiskeys and each utilizes different mash bills or finishes to create exciting new profiles of 291 Colorado Whiskey. Several earlier  “E” releases have garnered significant recognition on the world stage, including 291 E Colorado Whiskey Batch 7, named 2021’s World’s Best Wheat by the World Whiskies Awards. “E” Batch 3 was the inspiration for 291’s recent All Rye 100% Rye Malt Whiskey and Batch 9 was a collaboration with Marianne Eaves for the inaugural Eave’s Blind project. Each new release showcases 291’s fearless approach to experimentation.

Recently named Breakout Distiller of the Year at the 2023 ASCOT Awards and the 291 Colorado Rye Whiskey earning “Best of Class” in the SIP Awards, 291 Colorado Whiskey has captivated whiskey enthusiasts with its distinct spirits. The award recognition has solidified the brand’s position as a trailblazer in the whiskey industry. Every whiskey made by the distillery tells a unique story, showcasing the passion and craftsmanship of the 291 team.

About 291 Colorado Whiskey

291 Colorado Whiskey is a uniquely American story honoring the Western whiskey of a bygone era. 291 is the passion project of a former New York City fashion photographer and was first created in a small basement from a one-of-a-kind still, constructed from old copper photographic plates. 291 is Hardmade the Colorado Way®, grain to barrel to bottle, and the distillery’s whiskies are finished with toasted staves of Colorado aspen trees. 291 Colorado Whiskey has been earning awards and recognition since its first run off the still in 2011. 291 was awarded 2022 Icons of Whiskey American Craft Distillery of the Year, World’s Best Wheat Whiskey in 2021 and World’s Best Rye Whiskey in 2018, and our white whiskeys were awarded Best American New Make in 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020 by the World Whiskies Awards.  The distillery has also earned 18 Liquid Gold designations from the Whisky Bible and similar high-altitude recognition from the IWSC, San Francisco International Spirits Competition, The American Whiskey Masters and numerous other competitions and publications.

Bullock distillery to offer limited release of Raleigh County-inspired bourbon

July 7, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Bullock DistilleryA West Virginia distillery released a new bourbon over the weekend in Beckley with a label depicting one of the waterfalls in the Piney Creek Preserve in Raleigh County.

The release of Piney Creek Bourbon Whiskey, crafted by The Bullock Distillery in Charleston, was held at a whiskey tasting event at Beckley’s Historic Black Knight municipal park.

Tickets to the tasting, which will take place from 5-8 p.m., are $35.

A portion of the proceeds will go toward the West Virginia Land Trust, which has partnered with the city of Beckley for outdoor recreation opportunities in the Piney Creek Preserve.

Set for an unveiling in September, the 613-acre Piney Creek Preserve will offer miles of recreational trails along land that was formerly used for coal mining.

Plans for the Piney Creek Preserve are being developed through a partnership with Beckley Outdoors and the land Trust, which will also have informational booths set up at the whiskey tasting.

Bullock Distillery co-owner Tighe Bullock said crafting a bourbon that supports and also features his hometown is a dream come true.

“It sounds cheesy to say this, but it really is,” Bullock said. “It’s kind of like closing the loop in some ways on what I want to do in my professional career path. I’ve always been thinking, ever since I was a kid, like how can I help Beckley and how can I help my areas, my communities. So this really is a dream come true.”

Bullock said the Piney Creek Bourbon is part of a single barrel release, which means they’ve made only 300 bottles. He added that the label for the bottle was also crafted by West Virginia artists.

A limited supply of the Piney Creek Bourbon will be available for purchase at the whiskey tasting in Beckley as well as at the Bullock Distillery in Charleston at 121 Washington St.

Bullock said people can thank his longtime friend, Beckley’s director of outdoor economic development, Corey Lilly, for helping him bring this idea to life.

“There are a lot of folks really pushing Beckley as an outdoor mecca and destination and really, really cool work they’re doing and I started thinking like, how can I help,” he said, “So we kind of came up with this Piney Creek Bourbon Whiskey idea to raise awareness, raise funds, and hopefully we get some good stuff going at the Piney Creek Preserve.”

Bullock said everything made by The Bullock Distillery is tied to West Virginia in more ways than one.

Not only are their products produced and bottled in West Virginia, but their alcohol is also proofed using Karst water from a family farm in Greenbrier County.

In the future, Bullock said he’d like to try to use water from Piney Creek as part of the proofing process.

“In the future I would like to work with the city and with the preserve on taking some water samples and potentially using them in the product,” he said. He added that their other products, which include a rye whiskey, gin, moonshine and vodka, will also be available to sample at the whiskey tasting.

“I think Black Knight has purchased pretty much our entire product line so people will have an opportunity to sample whatever they want,” Bullock said.

Beckley Parks and Recreation Director Leslie Gray Baker said the release of the Piney Creek Bourbon presents a unique opportunity for the city and helps spread the word about the work being done at the preserve.

“We’ve never had this opportunity where we’re going to be able to, with a group of people who are so committed to preservation, work along with them to make sure that the land is preserved,” Baker said.

She added that the Piney Creek Preserve will pair nicely with the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine because both areas give visitors an inside look at West Virginia’s history with coal.

“The history of that gorge is just so interesting and certainly complements what we do here at the exhibition coal mine,” Baker said.

Buffalo Trace Releases Ultra-Rare Peated Bourbon, the Latest in Its Experimental Collection

May 27, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Buffalo Trace DistilleryUsing a peated grain for its 26th experimental bourbon, the revered distillery has created a smoky sensation.

Buffalo Trace Peated Bourbon Mashbill

The liquid in question began its life nearly a decade ago, when master distiller Harlen Wheatley crafted distillate that included a peated malt in its mashbill. The smoked grain was sourced from the United Kingdom (most likely Scotland) and replaced traditional barley—an ingredient which often accounts for up to 10 percent of the cereals used during fermentation.

Outside of that unorthodox substitution, everything about the process was de rigueur for standard bourbon making. The majority of the mashbill consisted of corn, the secondary grain was rye, and after distillation it entered unused barrels staved with charred American oak.

“The Experimental Collection is not about breaking the rules of bourbon,” Wheatley confirms. “In fact, 95 percent of our experiments stay within the confines of traditional methods of making whiskey.”

Notable examples from the past include bourbons that used rice or oats in place of rye in the mashbill—whiskeys that were bombarded with infrared light or aged in barrels that were charred four times longer than usual.

“We conduct this research to better understand the variables that affect our final flavor profiles,” adds Wheatley.

It took careful monitoring to deliver such a result. Because the liquid was unlike anything Buffalo Trace had worked with before, Harlen and his team drew from the six barrels frequently as they aged, on the lower levels of the distillery’s two oldest warehouses.

It probably won’t be long before this one earns the moniker “Peated Pappy” and starts selling for 20 times that on secondary markets.

About Buffalo Trace Distillery

Buffalo Trace bottles some of the most sought-after whiskeys on the planet. The Kentucky-based distillery is responsible for Pappy Van Winkle, George T. Stagg, Eagle Rare, and many other exalted expressions capable of whipping just about any bourbon fan into a frenzy. Nevertheless, no matter how impressive their laurels may be, the craftspeople here hardly seem content to rest on them. In addition to being one of the most acclaimed distilleries in the industry, it’s also among the most creative and experimental—always eager to push limits of flavor. For proof, you needn’t look further than the Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection. Debuting in 2006, the series has now expanded to include its 26th release: Peated Bourbon. What can you expect inside the glass? Let’s uncork this one.

Dr Disrespect Releases 2nd Run of Black Steel Bourbon at Lower Price, Higher Proof

May 27, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Black Steel BourbonOn Tuesday, Guy Beahm, better known by his video-game-streaming moniker Dr Disrespect, launched the second batch of his whiskey brand, Black Steel Bourbon.

Black Steel Bourbon Batch 2 is available now from ReserveBar for $59.99.

The first batch of Black Steel Bourbon launched in November and sold out in minutes.

Black Steel Bourbon described its second batch of Kentucky straight bourbon as “a unique blend of the highest caliber aged barrels.” Marianne Eaves, Kentucky’s first female master distiller, stayed on board to craft batch 2 after also making the first batch.

Most of the time, whiskeys stay fairly consistent between batches. For Black Steel Bourbon, however, Dr Disrespect has switched things up quite a bit. Here’s what’s changed from batch 1 to batch 2:

The price: While Black Steel Bourbon’s first batch launched for $64.99, batch 2 has dropped by $5 and can be had for $59.99. It’s not often that a brand sells out an expression in minutes and then lowers the price for the next batch, so consumers should be happy about this unexpected change.

The proof: Black Steel Bourbon’s initial batch was bottled at 93 proof. For this new run, Dr Disrespect upped the proof all the way to 100, a change mosts whiskey fans will welcome with open arms. 100 proof, or 50% ABV, is a great proof point for a whiskey.

About Black Steel Spirits

It takes a bit of madness to push for the evolution of a category that celebrates unchanging tradition. Enter Guy Beahm, the man behind the unapologetic gaming legend Dr DisRespect. With his comptetitive streak, bourbon obsession, and implacable drive for the best and only the best, consider it his destiny to create the most delectable bourbon designed for a newer, wilder whiskey drinker. And so, Black Steel has Arrived. Traditional Kentucky craft with a refreshing take on what it means to be a Bourbon.

Filibuster Distillery in redemptive spirits for new whiskey release

May 26, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Filibuster Distillery SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. – Filibuster Distillery’s new bourbon whiskey has the spirit of the purity law. The success and growth comes with a smooth give-and-take in the process.

“We are distributing in 18 states and two international markets, so it just brings up a lot of responsibility now,” Filibuster Distillery Chief Executive Officer Sid Dilawri said.

This business that’s barreled with integrity has made changes since being charged $700,000 by Shenandoah County for dumping water in a stream a few years ago.

“Filibuster Distillery wants to be better and stronger with every new drink release. They invested in a chiller after the 2021 settlement so that the entire distilling process is done the right way.

Filibuster Distillery’s team feels like a community hub with the ingredients to make drinks all purchased from farmers in the area. Dilawri says investing in the chiller makes the business 100 percent self-sustainable.

“All the grains we get goes to the farmer and all the water while we use is a hundred gallons of glycol which we used in the system and it’s a closed loop system —nothing goes out, nothing goes in everything we just chill our mesh,” Dilawri said.

“This is the country for dreams you can you can dream it and you can build it and you can make it happen. There are going to be obstacles. There are going to be people who I will take you down, but be strong because the majority of the people are good people here,” Dilawri said.

He describes the new bourbon whiskey as an exclusive medal of success.

“There are only 16 barrels we did for it, and this also celebrates the journey and dream of coming to America,” Dilawri said.

Anyone wanting a taste of his spirit is encouraged to be there for release day on June 4.

About Filibuster Distillery

Filibuster Distillery was born in the heart of Washington D.C. and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, making it a true product of the Washington, DC area. Founded at a liquor store just steps away from Capitol Hill, the Filibuster brand quickly transformed from a 1st generation immigrant family’s passion project into an incredible American dream.

Filibuster Distillery prides itself on creating an experience that is far from ordinary. Their approach to spirits is unconventional, utilizing innovative production methods and artisanal standards of distillation to create extra layers of complexity within each spirit.

Booker’s Bourbon Releases First Batch Of 2023 Collection

April 27, 2023 By Dustin Scoggins

Booker's BourbonBooker’s Bourbon has released its first batch of the 2023 collection, Booker’s Batch 2023-01 “Charlie’s Batch.”

A statement from Booker’s noted that this batch is named in honor of Charlie Hutchens, the craftsman behind the signature wooden box that each Booker’s bottle comes in.

Officials from Booker’s noted that Charlie worked at the distillery when Booker Noe was master distiller and is also a long-time friend of the Noe family. During his time at the distillery, Charlie was quite the storyteller and would entertain others throughout the workday. He was detail oriented, like Booker with his whiskey.

After several years, Charlie left the business to open his own cabinet shop with his brother. Charlie handcrafted the very first Booker’s Bourbon wooden boxes in his garage and has created the boxes for the brand since.

He and his brother have expanded their business to create other wood products for different brands and projects in the Beam family, such as supplying custom furniture to the new Fred B. Noe Distillery – where Booker’s Bourbon is now distilled.

Charlie still lives near the Booker Noe Distillery and spends his free time fishing and vacationing with his family in South Carolina.

Like all batches of Booker’s Bourbon, Booker’s “Charlie’s Batch” was selected by seventh generation Master Distiller Fred Noe.

The distiller noted Booker’s “Charlie’s Batch” is a well-aged amber color and has a balanced aroma of oak, toasted nuts and vanilla notes without too much wood. It has a slightly warm taste with a pleasant finish.

Booker’s Bourbon is bottled uncut and unfiltered, and inspired by a 200-year-old family tradition. Sixth Generation Beam Master Distiller Booker Noe first created Booker’s Bourbon as a Christmas gift for close friends and family. Booker took barrels found in the center-cut of the rack house and bottled the bourbon straight-from-the-barrel.

Each batch is released in limited quantities and features a unique label and batch name that honors Booker Noe, his love of family and his spirit of experimentation.

Booker’s “Charlie’s Batch” was aged  7 years, 1 month, and 8 days and clocks in at 126.6 proof. It’s now available nationwide in limited quantities with a suggested retail price of $89.99 for a 750 mL bottle.
