Letter from Rhonda Kallman, CEO of Boston Harbor Distillery
I’m delighted to share the news…Today the establishment of the American Single Malt category as an official government standard goes into effect by the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). This is the first new alcohol category to be recognized in over five decades.
In 2012, when I incorporated Boston Harbor Distillery, I recognized not only a white space for whiskey making in Boston, I also recognized that Single Malt Whisky was considered the gold standard of whiskey in the world and there were only a handful of American distilleries producing it in any meaningful way.
Putnam Single Malt was the first whiskey distilled at Boston Harbor Distillery. It’s made from 100% two-row malted barley and pure water from the Quabbin Reservoir, distilled in our Vendome copper pot still with a registered serial #1776, aged in new white American Oak 53-gallon barrels and bottled at 86 and 100 proof (bottled-in-bond). It is a spectacularly complex and dense whiskey that boasts well-integrated flavors and a satisfying finish that leaves you longing for more.
Huge show of gratitude to the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission leadership, who’s membership is made up of ~100 craft distilleries, who have worked tirelessly to bring this category to fruition. Seek out these remarkable American Single Malt Whiskies and enjoy the remarkable flavors made by craftspeople from all parts of America πΊπ²
